DeCastro
Sisters Peggy and Cherie -- call
themselves the "Cuban bombshells," and are still living up to that name on the stage. The DeCastro Sisters were originally a trio with Babette, their
youngest sister, who passed away in 1993. Olgita DeCastro Marino, a
cousin, filled the onstage gap left by Babette, but she died in 2000. The DeCastros' mother was a former "Ziegfeld Follies" dancer in New
York City, and their father owned a sugar cane plantation in the Dominican
Republic. Their mother took up opera singing as a hobby and pretty soon her
daughters were singing too. They were imitating the Andrews Sisters and
hitting Cuban stages before any had turned 14. They moved to America, where they played such places as New York's
Copacabana, appeared in a movie with Carmen Miranda and made it big in
1955 with their one and only hit, "Teach Me Tonight." The song remains
their hallmark. |

Bell and The Bell Boys, a rock combo formed closely on the heels of Bill Haley
& His Comets, appeared with Haley, Allen Freed, The Platters, Tony
Martinez & His Band, and Johnny Johnston in the 1956 film Rock Around The
Clock. That, the fact they were the FIRST such North American group to
appear in the U.K., touring with Tommy Steele in 1956, and actually
arranged Elvis' mega-hit Hound Dog, are their main claims to fame. Led by
vocalist Bell, the group included Russ Contic on piano, Chick Keeney on
drums, Frank Brent on bass, Jerry Mayo on trumpet, and Jack Kane on sax.

John
& Pam Thompson
, The Great Tomsoni & Co. tackle the audience
with magic hokum-pokum. Tomsoni, who delivers his spoken accents in fake
Polish, comes clean with mostly pantomime as tricks work to his
surprise. His company is wife Pamela, and both have been presenting one
of the funniest magic acts for years. . Tomsoni does manage to
mystify between his quirky mannerisms, producing numerous white doves
fluttering from scarves and even out of a clear plastic square. Partner
Pamela, meanwhile, supplies him with gadgets as the dumb, putupon,
blond, gum-chewing assistant. She's a perfect foil.
He switches from pantomime to standup comedian, mouthing crazy sound
effects within funny phone monolog. The "Babushkas from Warsaw" finale
has Thomsoni frantically pulling dozens of knotted scarves from a hollow
silver tube, and going on and on until he bunches the material together
and - presto - out pops a bowling ball... 'Variety'

Keely Smith
The mid-'90s lounge music revival has come and gone, the music of Louis
Prima has been used to sell khaki pants, but--strangely enough--vocalist
and Prima ex-wife Ms. Smith has remained relatively quiet. Until now. With
the appropriately titled Swing, Swing, Swing, Keely proves she still has
the perfect timing, pitch, and vocals that she had on those classic
collaborations with Prima Smith starts with a lively medley of "When
You're Smiling" and "The Sheik of Araby," does Prima favorites "Jump,
Jive, An' Wail" and "Robin Hood," and includes plenty of unique numbers
she can call her own (just check out "Keely's Boogie"). "Yeah, Yeah,
Yeah," "Yata Hei," and the album's title track are some highlights--upbeat
numbers where the 17-piece Frankie Capp Orchestra provide the jazzy energy
of Keely Smith's old bandleader, Billy May. --Jason Verlinde

Tony Ruivivar
is the original member of the Society of
Seven
that opened at the Outrigger in 1969. They'd come out of Hong Kong
as the Fabulous Echoes several years previously and passed through Hawaii
on the way to Las Vegas, the Ed Sullivan Show, and guest spots on the
other national television musical variety shows of the era. The Fabulous
Echoes were popular in Hawaii as well when they became the Society Of
Seven shortly before opening at the Outrigger. Ruivivar says one secret to
the group's longevity is "hard work and enjoying what you're doing." He
adds it's also important to selectively incorporate new ideas without
losing the original essence of the act. Advances in synthesizers,
sequencers, sound gear and lighting allow the SOS to do things that
weren't possible in 1969. |

Tony Curtis The man behind the mask of one hundred and fifty
different roles, spanning over fifty years, now reveals himself to be Tony
Curtis, fine artist. Tony Curtis’ incredible skill and versatility in the
performing arts, is matched by his innate ability to create great beauty
in fine art, reflecting the rich life of the artist, giving enormous
pleasure to the collector... While his acting career continues
unabated today, what happens to his enormous need to create when the
cameras are off and the sound stages are silent at the end of the day?
The same questioning and receptive mind that captures the subtle nuances
of daily life, and later incorporates them into his film roles, has spent
the last several decades storing sights and memories that are now
flowering on his vivid, intensely colored canvases, that virtually burst
with life.
